Donnerstag, 2. Juni, 2016 - Illinois bis North Dakota

2.6.2016

When my parents first told me they wanted to complete the TransAmerica trail by bike, I didn't think it would actually happen. But, I'm typing this while sitting in Fargo, ND, 1/3 of the way to Astoria, OR with two trail bikes strapped to the tiny Prius C, so I guess I was wrong.

After arriving in Chicago late Wednesday night, Thursday morning started by playing Tetris with various shaped bike bags to fit everything in the car. The bikes were mounted on the back of the car and strapped down, which took longer than the carrier instructions let on.

Finally, with everyone and everything stowed, it was time to hit the road towards Wisconsin. Shortly after crossing the border, we stopped at a Perkins restaurant, one of my parents' favorite breakfast restaurants, where they discovered that being over the age of 55 comes with perks in forms of a special menu.

After breakfast we made our way across hilly and cloudy Wisconsin stopping only once more to fill up the car (the Prius' gas mileage is good, but not that good).

The sun came back out in time to navigate hectic Minneapolis city traffic as we began crossing into our 3rd state of the day. The rest of Minnesota was filled with more and more farms and fewer and fewer cars.

Despite the on set of travel fatigue and aching bones we pressed on to cross into North Dakota and spend the night in Fargo, mostly so my parents could claim to have stayed in the town that's the setting of the famous Coen brothers movie.

Next up - crossing through North Dakota and making our way from flat and farm land to the Rocky Mountains in Montana! (Friederike)
